Why is R-22 Freon so expensive?

Why is R-22 so expensive

BY AIRZONE SERVICES

A common concern homeowners with older systems have when receiving HVAC Services, comes in the three letters listed under freon cost, R-22. In 2020, US began phasing out the production and importing of R-22 according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Because R-22 is a refrigerant that is often used in air-conditioning equipment and in the US, has been discontinued due to its effects on the ozone layer. After 2020, only recovered, recycled, or reclaimed supplies of R-22 have been available in the US. It is worth mentioning that the production and “not use” of R-22 is being phased out. Nor is there any obligation for any homeowner to change over to a new system right away. The phasing out will result in R-22 Freon and equipment will over time become limited. Costs to service equipment with R-22 are expected to rise, as supplies become more in demand. With EPA also prohibiting manufacture of new air conditioning system that use R-22. New systems are manufactured using alternatives, such as R-410A.

You may be wondering what the alternatives to using R-22 Freon are. Unfortunately, the discontinuing of R-22 is not as easy as changing out one part of your system or refrigerant type. Because R-410A has a higher pressure, R-22 systems are not built to handle the alternative. New system that are manufactured to handle the alternative Freon will need to be installed. R-410A Freon is the most common alternative to R-22. It absorbs and releases heat better than R-22, making it more energy efficient and improves performance. R-410A is a, hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), which is void of chlorine. Hydro chlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs, that are chemicals that are mainly used as refrigerants, deplete the Earth’s protective ozone layer and contribute to climate change.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT CHANGING OUT THE OLD SYSTEM YOU HAVE:

  •  Energy consumption

·Tip 1: New energy efficient air conditioners save on energy costs. Even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save significantly on your energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.

A new central air-conditioner can run at least 14% more efficient than a 10 yr old standard system.

  •  R-22 freon and equipment

·Tip 2: With innovation comes improvements to ac systems.  In 10 years, technology and advancements has made technological advancements on how a system works.  Not only will AC Repair costs for R-22 systems become more expensive to repair due to parts and accessible equipment.  Parts will become limited over a span of time.  New systems will be easier to maintain both in repair and replace.

  •  Next Phase Scheduled For Jan 2030

·Tip 3: With a standard AC System expectancy lasting between 10-12 years. By the year 2030, systems running off R-22 will not be as common to service due to expectancy. Ban on all remaining production and import of all HCFCs is scheduled.

Unfortunately, discontinuing R-22 are not as easy as changing out one part of your system.  Because R-410A has a higher pressure, R-22 systems are not built to handle the alternative.  New system that are manufactured to handle the alternative Freon will need to be installed.  To ensure that your system is running at its peak performance tune ups are valuable services for your system.  Checking for leaks and refrigerant level will ensure your AC is running at peak performance.  At Air Zone Heating and Air Conditioning LLC we offer quality HVAC service performed by an experienced staff of trained technicians at competitive prices.  Offering great deals on installations, repairs, estimates and maintenance service for central Air Conditioners and Heaters of all brands and models.  Ask us about our AC maintenance plans which provide low-cost seasonal tune-ups to ensure your Air Conditioner is performing at the absolute best.  Located in Buda Texas and servicing all Austin and Surrounding Areas, we look forward to the opportunity to provide great quality Air Conditioner and Heating services.   Contact us online at www.airzoneservices.com or call us at 512.917.0384 for further assistance.
